Speech Team Basics
We are very excited to get started on another great season! Speech team is for people who enjoy acting or speaking, and/or debating. You don’t have to be an extrovert! Most of the time you will be competing in a room with less than ten other people. You will, however, get a chance to meet hundreds of great young men and women from all over the state of Ohio and perhaps all over the country. Last year, we sent twenty-three girls to states. Many girls broke to quarters and semi-finals—along with two in finals in Impromptu==see the blog for names on these accomplishments!
Some basics about speech team to help you understand what 's what!
Speech team is about personal best! It is lovely to get trophies (there are three given in each category at each tournament, with ribbons for fourth through sixth). It is lovely to go to states or nationals, but that is just gravy--the most important thing is that you grow more and more competent, proficient, and capable--You will!
Time Commitment: You do not have to go to every practice. Sign up for after school or Saturday practices when you can. About every four to six weeks, we will have a whole group meeting. We would ask that you make every effort to attend these. Then we will have coaching times set up each week. At first these may be by category, but there will also be individual times. Through most of the year, the times will be individual. There will be a sign up sheet posted outside the Green Room throughout the season. Sign up early--and REMEMBER TO COME when you sign up! Human beings being what they are, we also recommend that you try just dropping by when you have time. Sometimes there can be an unexpected opening or you may be able to work with other speech team members while you are waiting. I do expect you to practice on your own. Speech Team members frequently help each other prepare!
You do not have to go to every meet. We ask that you shoot for at least four meets during the season and that (if you qualify) you attend State and National Qualifiers. If you cannot make that many life will go on. If you can make more, it will help you earn NFL (National Forensic League) points and points toward your varsity letter. NFL members wear an honor chord at graduation and varsity speech team members get a an ND letter with the comedy-drama masks. There more meets you go to, the better chance you have to get to state and national qualifying meets!
Varsity Letter
Varsity Letter: How do you earn points? At every meet, you are given points for each round that you participate in. You can earn anywhere from one to six points each round depending on your category and your place in the round. So that at each meet you have the opportunity to earn from three to twenty four points. You receive NFL membership when you reach twenty-five points and a varsity letter when you reach 125 points.
A great way to earn points is through student congress. This is now a state event. There will be Congress at regular events and then at states. After states, we will have practice Congresses for national qualifiers which is at the Statehouse in early April! The winners go to Nationals and everyone has fun! Each time you compete in a Congress (the after school practice tournaments are usually about two hours), you get six points--even if you don't speak. You get lots more if you do!
Categories
Acting categories: Duo, Dramatic, Humorous
Speaking Categories: Oratorical Interp and Original Oratory
Prose –Poetry uses a book and is sort of in between speaking and acting
Limited Prep: Impromptu and Extemp –International and U.S.
Debate: Lincoln-Douglas , Congress, Public Forum
Choose a few that you are interested in! Then concentrate on one. It is possible to double enter, but I only recommend it in special circumstances. If you choose duo, I ask that you be careful about your level of commitment. It is very unfair to let down a partner. There can also be times when your schedule and your partner's schedule do not mesh--we can help you find a partner or you can have one of your own--but think it through! You may want to double enter if you have a duo as one of your pieces. You cannot double enter in a debate event and a speech event as they conflict.
Meet Information
Meets last most of the day on Saturdays. They start at around 8:00 a.m. and usually end around 3:30 to 4:00p.m.. Obviously the greater the travel distance or the bigger the meet, the longer they will go. Lunch is provided at the schools for a reasonable fee. Bring homework and/or cards for down times.
Cost
Membership is $80.00. Please have the first 50.00 dollar payment in by November 15th. The thirty dollar second half will be due by your first tournament. If you wish, you may pay the whole amount in the first check to save remembering later! All checks should be made out to Notre Dame Academy (or NDA). There will also be transportation and hotel costs for our out of town meets—they are not mandatory. We will pay for all your registrations for each tournament. If your family budget is tight, please feel free to see me about it privately as fees can be totally or partially waived. Do not feel you have to miss out on speech for financial reasons. This information would be kept private!
What to Wear
You should dress up for speech—we recommend a business suit. You may wear the same one for every meet all four years if you wish—people have done this before! Think of it as a lucky suit! It is important that dress is modest—not too short for skirts, you should not be able to see cleavage when you bend over or your tummy when you stretch—we move a lot in many different categories and you want to look professional. We will go over more information as time goes on.
